For the third year running, the Swann Group is partnering with Mining Journal Intelligence to produce the Mining Journal Global Leadership Report 2020, released this week.
For this edition, cosponsored by Statalis, we worked with Mining Journal Intelligence’s team to interview 27 senior executives from some of the world’s largest mining companies, representing a total market capitalisation of approaching US$400 billion.
The report highlights the challenges that are most concerning C suite executives right now and identifies how their focus could and should shift over the next decade.
THE KEY GLOBAL LEADERSHIP REPORT FINDINGS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE EDITOR, CHRIS CANN ARE:
- Safety is presently the top priority on the C-suite’s agenda – but plummets from top spot to penultimate position looking ten years ahead. This is not to suggest leaders will be unconcerned with safety in the long term, but that some more immediate issues should be resolved in the next decade.
- The top five priorities all relate to issues of Trust, reflecting recent controversies in the sector.
- By 2030, Responsible Sourcing will become the top priority, leaping fifteen places from its current position.
- Issues around Transformation appear to be low in leaders’ list of concerns now and for the future.
The report is a unique view of leadership in mining, informed by interviews with 27 of the most prominent names in the industry, including Tom Palmer (Newmont), Mark Bristow (Barrick Gold), Mark Cutifani (Anglo American) and Jake Klein (Evolution Mining).
The conclusions from these in-depth interviews are supplemented by the findings from a Global Leadership Survey of more than 500 individuals from METS companies, investors and mining firms.
The report analyses the survey results by age, gender and geography to provide a comprehensive picture of the results by different demographic groups.
